4 Tips for an Epic Engagement Shoot

Capturing your love story

One of our favorite things about securing your wedding photographer is also hiring them for your engagement photos.  If you’re on the fence about taking engagement photos, we definitely recommend doing them!  These are a fun opportunity to get to have your love story captured in your element.  Whether captured in your favorite adventure spot, a home session, or the place you got engaged, engagement photos bring an opportunity to celebrate the engaged season you’re in and attire that you love wearing on the daily, too.  Another fun added bonus?  You have the opportunity to build that wedding day relationship with your photographer now.  This will only help to get you that much more comfortable and excited for your wedding day.

We reached out to our network of professionals and below are four tips to help you prepare for your engagement session.

  1. Clothing: ‘You want them to coordinate not match. Think about the style of clothes, how they flow, and how the colors or patterns are’ - Nicole Moore Photography.   Derek Palmer of Derek Palmer Creative Media says, ‘Please wear appropriate footwear, the amount of heels I’ve had ladies wear in the snow and on the beach astonishes me , even after letting them know to wear appropriate footwear.’

  2. Consider Colors: Be aware of  ideas for complimentary colors for the scene.  For example, blue on the lake blends in, dark green in the forest is kinda dull - Derek Palmer Creative Media

  3. Location: ‘I like to plan with them on where we will do the shoot so that it is personal for the couple. If they have a favorite place to go hiking or where they had their first date etc. This will bring back fond memories and often helps them be a little more interactive’ - Mike Robison of Mike Robison Photography

  4. Have Fun and Relax: ‘Bring your love for each other!! Go on a relaxing date the day before, spend time with each other, surprise each other with thoughtful gifts. It makes the session so much more magical when they are passionate for each other! - Derek Palmer Creative Media
